My story

Welcome to my little blog and thank you for visiting!

I created it in order to document moments, thoughts and rants during my journey to becoming a midwife.

Since I can remember I was fascinated by birth, babies and pregnancy~ apparently when I was a toddler I would say "Mummy look, it's a beebee!". My two younger sisters were born at home when I was 2 and then 6 years old and I was in the house for both, I even remember the first moment I met my youngest sister right after she was born and am so greatful for that memory.

I started my midwifery course straight out of school at 17, I had applied to every midwifery course in Ireland and got my first choice :) I was asked by teachers and my parents if I was sure I didn't want to apply for anything else as well... My answer was always 'No, why would I do that when all I want to do is midwifery?!'

The course was different than expected and the hospital experience has been far from what I knew midwifery to be. I knew midwives worked at homebirths and babies being born at home was normal before I knew it was actually far from the norm of society. Of course starting the training I expected to be challenged on my beliefs and knew I would have to learn the hospital way long before I could ever experience community or homebirth midwifery, but it is still difficult!

My hope for the future is that when I graduate in 2014 I will travel to New Zealand to gain experience in their midwifery system and perhaps to Canada after that! I love to travel and to combine that with midwifery would be amazing. Further down the road I plan to be a homebirth community midwife providing holistic midwifery care to women and their families and I don't know where in the world that could be!

Please leave feedback on my posts, send me suggestions for things to write about and I'd be more than happy to publish posts by other student midwives too!

Best of luck in your midwifery journey x
